Why Kyokushin Karate?

What is Kyokushin Karate?

Kyokushin Karate is a full-contact martial art that originated in Japan in the mid-20th century. Founded by Masutatsu Oyama, it emphasises rigorous training, discipline, and a strong philosophical foundation. The term "Kyokushin" translates to "the ultimate truth," which reflects the art's commitment to pushing physical and mental boundaries.

The training principles of Kyokushin Karate are centered around physical conditioning, technique development, and mental fortitude. Practitioners engage in a variety of drills that enhance their striking abilities, footwork, and defensive manoeuvres.

The training regimen typically includes kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring), which collectively foster a comprehensive skill set. Research indicates that consistent practice can lead to improvements in strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, with studies showing up to a 30% increase in overall fitness levels among dedicated practitioners.

Lions Program

Kyokushin Karate offers numerous benefits for both children and adults. For children aged 5-12 years, participation in martial arts can significantly enhance physical coordination, self-discipline, and social skills. A structured environment promotes respect for others and fosters teamwork. Additionally, studies have shown that children involved in martial arts exhibit improved focus and academic performance, with a reported 20% increase in concentration levels compared to their peers.

For children 5 - 12 years of age (as a guide only), the Little and Young Lions program is a  specific Kyokushin program designed to improve confidence, sporting agility, learn martial arts and self-defence skills, discipline and respect.

Teens (13years +) and Adults

Adults, on the other hand, benefit from stress relief, improved physical fitness, and the opportunity to learn self-defence techniques. Engaging in Kyokushin Karate can lead to a 25% reduction in stress levels, as reported by practitioners who regularly participate in classes.

Gradings

The grading system in Kyokushin Karate is goal-oriented, providing a clear pathway for advancement. Students progress through a series of coloured belts, each representing a specific level of skill and knowledge. This structured approach not only motivates students but also instills a sense of accomplishment as they achieve their goals. Grading tests typically involve demonstrating proficiency in techniques, kata, and sparring, ensuring that students are well-rounded in their abilities.
