Chapter 01

What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on ground fighting, control, and submissions. Unlike striking arts, BJJ teaches you to neutralise and control an opponent using leverage, technique, and body mechanics - regardless of size or strength.

It is often called "physical chess" - every movement creates the next decision, and thinking two positions ahead is as important as physical ability. The mental engagement is just as demanding as the physical.

Originally developed by the Gracie family in Brazil from Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, BJJ gained worldwide recognition when Royce Gracie submitted larger and stronger fighters of all disciplines in the early UFC - proving that technique always beats size when applied correctly.

BJJ is the only sport where you can walk in on day one having never trained in your life - and within months, regularly control people twice your size. That is the power of technique over strength.

- Coach Steve Henderson - 2nd Degree BJJ Black Belt - GMA

Chapter 03

The Benefits of Training BJJ

BJJ is one of the few activities where the benefits genuinely compound week after week. They show up in how you move, how you think, how you handle stress, and how you see yourself.

Most members report noticing changes within the first 4 to 6 weeks - in fitness, sleep, confidence, and stress levels.

I didn't start BJJ to get fit. But within three months I was the fittest I'd been in a decade. I didn't start it to manage stress. But it became the thing that switched everything off. BJJ just does this to people.

Gi vs No-Gi - What Is the Difference?

BJJ is trained in two formats - Gi and No-Gi. Both are BJJ, but the uniform changes the game significantly. At GMA, general classes include both formats.

👑
Traditional Format
Gi BJJ
Also called: Kimono Training

A heavy cotton jacket with reinforced drawstring pants and a rank belt. The thick lapel is specifically designed for gripping. GMA-branded Gi uniforms are available to purchase directly from us at highly reasonable prices.

  • Grab collar, lapel, sleeves and pants - gripping is fundamental
  • Slower, more technical and methodical pace
  • Lapel chokes and sleeve grips are Gi-specific weapons
  • Ideal for beginners - slower pace gives you time to think
  • Traditional belt progression and grading system
  • Recommended starting format for all new students
Modern Format
No-Gi BJJ
Also called: Submission Wrestling

A fitted rashguard with board shorts or compression spats. No jacket, no belt. GMA rashvests are available to purchase from us - perfect for branded No-Gi training gear at highly reasonable prices.

  • No clothing grips - control through body positioning only
  • Uses underhooks, overhooks, wrist control and neck ties
  • Faster paced - more scrambles and athleticism required
  • Expanded leg lock and wrestling-based techniques
  • More directly applicable to MMA grappling
  • Great complement to Gi training once fundamentals are solid
