BJJ Grading system
What do the different belts and stripes mean?
There is a ranking system that is represented by the colour belt the practitioner wears. After training hard and learning several techniques, the head coach will assess the student’s progress, and award them the next rank on their current belt. Each belt rank can take years to earn, so the student’s progress is awarded with stripes on their belt.
The student will earn 4 stripes on their belt before being awarded the next belt rank. The belt ranks start with a white belt, then blue, purple, brown, and ending with a highly respected black belt. It usually takes around 10 to 12 years to attain the rank of black belt, then once achieved, the practitioner earns degrees by consistently training for years and years. While there are similar grading systems, we follow the IBJFF system as shown below.
